High Cholesterol
Cholesterol awareness has become a very popular topic over the past 10 years or so.
It seems that once we reach age 40, we are all tracking our cholesterol numbers as close as we watch our waist lines. Unfortunately both seem to increase after 40.
Although, smaller is better when it comes to cholesterol and waistlines, our bodies require cholesterol for basic cell functioning. Men and women can’t produce sex hormones without it. And you could not digest your food without cholesterol being present in your intestines. Even your cells need cholesterol for their outside protective membrane.
The problem of course is when we have too much cholesterol in the blood stream and deposits of plaque occur in the blood vessel walls.
The majority of us produce more cholesterol than is needed. Reducing our consumption of foods high in saturated fats and trans fats would be an excellent health choice.
What high cholesterol can cause
Excess LDL cholesterol gets deposited on the walls of the arteries that feed oxygenated blood to the heart and brain. Inflammation in the arteries can exacerbate the problem and cause a build up of calcium and plaque in the artery walls. This condition known as atherosclerosis is the cause of heart attacks and strokes.
High cholesterol affects approximately 17% of Americans over the age of 20. Heart disease caused by atherosclerosis is Worldwide, the single leading cause of death and disability.
Control your own destiny
As bad as the news is, there is a silver lining to this cloud. Heart disease is for the most part preventable. Your risk of developing heart disease can be greatly diminished by following guidelines set forth by the NCEP, The Natural Cholesterol Education Program, and they provide steps for you to take. In summary, exercise, eat a heart healthy diet low in trans fat and saturated fat, quit smoking and if you are obese, lose weight. If this fails to adequately lower your cholesterol or you want a quick start, try a clinically proven natural product and a high potency Omega 3 fish oil product.
